Interactive de facto map of the northern Syrian border belt. Taken in the Turkish operations of 2016–2019, the belt passed back to Syrian government administration in stages after the fall of Assad — complete by January 2026 — while the Turkish army stayed on under the defence pact between Ankara and Damascus. Ankara keeps more than 20,000 troops in the country and calls the outposts permanent for the foreseeable future. The map draws it as what it is: Syrian territory under a thin Turkish pinstripe — a garrison on the ground, not control of it.
