Turkish forces garrison a belt of northern Syria — Afrin, Azaz, Al-Bab, Jarablus, Tell Abyad and Ras al-Ain — territory administered by the Syrian government since January 2026 but where Ankara keeps its outposts by agreement with Damascus. In northern Iraq, Turkish bases inside the Kurdistan Region remain over Baghdad’s objections, and in Cyprus the Turkish army underwrites the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, recognized by no other state. This map shows where Turkish troops actually are — garrisons, occupations, and the de facto state they sustain — rather than Turkey’s legal borders alone.
