In 1761 a French ship wrecked there left behind some sixty enslaved Malagasy, of whom seven women and a baby were rescued fifteen years later. Mauritius claims it as a dependency ceded by France to Britain in 1814; a 2010 agreement to manage it jointly was never ratified by the French parliament, and the Chagos treaty of 2025 has encouraged Port Louis to press the claim.
