Tigray, held by the Tigray People's Liberation Front, which dominated Ethiopian politics for decades before Abiy Ahmed came to power. The war it fought against the federal army and Eritrea from 2020 to 2022 killed hundreds of thousands, and the Pretoria agreement that ended it left Tigray under an interim administration. Western Tigray stayed outside its control. In July 2026 the TPLF declared the agreement effectively dead, and fighting has returned. On 21 September 2026 it joined six other armed movements in the Ethiopian Peoples' Forces Alliance for Survival, which aims to remove Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's government and install a transitional administration.
