Interactive de facto map of Syria. Following the collapse of the Assad regime in December 2024, Syria was a fragmented country — and in August 2026 it grew markedly less so. The dissolution of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces returned the northeast to Damascus, leaving the government in control of most of the country for the first time since 2012. Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham-led forces hold Damascus and the western interior, Turkish troops remain garrisoned along the northern belt under the defence pact with Ankara, Israel has extended direct control over the Golan buffer and southern Syria, the Druze of Suwayda govern themselves, and remnants of the Islamic State persist in the Syrian desert. This map shows the real patchwork of control in post-Assad Syria — and lets you step back through the SDF’s former territory.
