The Syrian Democratic Forces no longer exist as a territorial authority. Dominated by the Kurdish YPG, the SDF governed the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES, or "Rojava") — its own political institutions, security services and economy — until August 2026, when its forces were folded into the Syrian Ministry of Defence and AANES handed its institutions to Damascus, completing the integration agreed in March 2025. The northeast is now administered by the Syrian government. This page opens the map of Syria with the SDF’s final territorial extent drawn over it, and the Syria panel can step further back to February 2026 — though not to the group’s greatest extent, which predates the archive.
