Nigeria — De Facto Map

Nigeria — Federal republic · West Africa · Jihadist insurgency round Lake Chad.

Nigeria: Africa's most populous country, some 230 million people in a federation of 36 states, governed from Abuja by President Bola Tinubu since 2023. Its army has fought a jihadist insurgency in the north-east since 2009. The movement known as Boko Haram split in 2016, and the Islamic State's West Africa Province now holds the shores and islands of Lake Chad and much of the countryside of northern Borno, while what remains of Boko Haram keeps smaller pockets nearby. The map draws both. Nigeria sits in ECOWAS, whose commission it hosts, and leads the regional task force fighting the insurgents with its neighbours round the lake.
