French maps, following the survey made after Savoy passed to France in 1860, draw the border below the summit on the Italian side, leaving the top and the ice cap in France; Italian maps, following the 1861 convention, run it along the watershed across the summit. The two have never settled it. There is no garrison and no crossing post at 4,800 metres, but two sets of local rules: Chamonix and the Haute-Savoie prefecture regulate the area as French, and when France extended a protected zone over it in 2020, Rome protested that the border had been moved.
