Imia / Kardak — Contested islets · Aegean Sea · Claimed by Greece and Turkey.

Two uninhabited rocks off the Turkish coast in the Dodecanese: Imia to Greece, Kardak to Turkey. Athens holds that Italy ceded them with the islands in 1947; Ankara answers that no treaty names them. Rival flag-plantings in January 1996 brought the two NATO allies close to war until the United States brokered a withdrawal, and neither has kept flags or troops on them since. The map draws them as contested, striped in both countries' colours.
