The Shia party-militia backed by Iran exercises de facto control across southern Lebanon and the Beqaa valley — its own armed forces, social services and security order operating beside, and often above, the Lebanese state. Battered by the wars with Israel since 2023 and under sustained pressure to disarm, it remains the strongest armed actor in Lebanon.
