Ethiopia: Africa's second most populous country, governed from Addis Ababa by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed since 2018. The federal government holds the capital, the cities and the main roads, but not all of the country. Tigray has been run by its own leadership since the 2022 Pretoria agreement ended a two-year war; Fano militias hold much of the Amhara countryside; the Oromo Liberation Army holds pockets of Oromia; an Afar front holds ground on the edge of Tigray; and Eritrea's army still sits on Ethiopian land along the border.
