Eritrea: a Red Sea state of some three and a half million people, independent from Ethiopia since 1993 and ruled ever since by President Isaias Afwerki, without elections and with open-ended national service. Its army fought beside Ethiopia's federal forces in the Tigray war of 2020–22 and never fully withdrew: the map draws the six pieces of Ethiopian land it still holds along the border, from Badme to Irob, in Eritrea's blue, and the two countries' map controls show which of them each side claims. Relations with Addis Ababa have since soured over Ethiopia's ambition to regain access to the sea.
