The Clan del Golfo, which calls itself the Ejército Gaitanista de Colombia (EGC): a drug-trafficking army grown from paramilitaries who kept their weapons when the AUC demobilised in 2006, named after the Gulf of Urabá where it began. It is the country's largest armed group, with 3,157 armed combatants and 5,788 people in its support networks in March 2026, present across Antioquia, Córdoba and Chocó, the Caribbean plains up to the Sierra Nevada, and a corridor in Meta and Casanare. Its leader, Jobanis de Jesús Ávila, "Chiquito Malo", took over after Otoniel's capture in 2021. Talks with the Petro government in Doha were suspended and resumed during 2026; in July Petro revived Chiquito Malo's extradition order.
