Chad: a vast Saharan and Sahelian country of some 19 million people, ruled by Mahamat Idriss Déby since his father was killed at the front in 2021, and confirmed as president by an election in 2024. N'Djamena ended its defence pact with France, and the last French troops left in January 2025. Its forces fight the jihadist groups round Lake Chad, whose islands and shores in the Lac province are raided from Nigeria, and the country shelters hundreds of thousands of refugees from the war in neighbouring Sudan.
