Delian League in 431 B.C.
Delian League — Delian League · The Athenian Empire in All but Name.
Interactive map of the Delian League in 431 B.C. Founded in 478 B.C. after the Persian Wars as a coalition of Greek city-states pledged to mutual defense against Persia, the league was organized into five regional tribute districts (phoroi): Hellespontine, Ionian, Carian, Island, and Thracian. Athens, as hegemon, gradually transformed the alliance into an imperial system — in 454 B.C. the treasury was moved from the sacred island of Delos to the Athenian acropolis, and tribute was used to fund Athenian building projects including the Parthenon.
