The Tauri — Scythians.

The wild, un-Scythian people of the mountains of the Tauric peninsula — fierce mountaineers who hold the high range and the harbourless southern shore. They are dreaded above all for their goddess the Maiden, to whom they sacrifice the Greeks they take and the sailors the sea casts up wrecked on their coast; the heads of the slain they fix above their houses as guardians. Living by raiding and piracy, they answer to neither the Greek cities nor the Scythian kings.
