The settled Scythians of the well-watered forest-steppe north of the Greek colonies — the Georgi, the "farmers," who break the black earth and raise great crops of wheat. Yet they sow not to fill their own bellies but to SELL: their grain goes down the rivers to Olbia and the harbours of the Euxine, and from there by sea to feed the cities of Greece. They are the granary behind the steppe, the source of the Pontic corn on which the Greek world leans.
