The Bruttians — Roman Republic › Socii (Italic Allies).

The Bruttii held the toe of Italy, a mountainous and forested land of pitch and timber south of Lucania. An Oscan people who had broken away from the Lucanians a century before, they had long pressed on the Greek cities of the coast and resented the Roman peace that protected them. Of all the Italian allies the Bruttians would prove the most pro-Carthaginian: after Cannae they went over to Hannibal almost wholesale, and their country became his last redoubt in Italy, the ground from which he finally sailed for Africa in 203.
