Corcyra (Korkyra) — Roman Republic › Roman Protectorates in Greece.

The island of Corcyra, commanding the mouth of the Adriatic, was the first Greek community to pass under Roman protection in 229 BC, when its commander Demetrius of Pharos surrendered it to the consul Cn. Fulvius. It became the forward anchorage of Rome’s watch on the Illyrian coast.
