The great port of Epidamnus, which the Romans called Dyrrhachium, commanded the shortest crossing from Brundisium and the head of the future via Egnatia into Macedon. Relieved by Rome from an Illyrian siege in 229 BC, it was taken into fides and became the linchpin of the Adriatic bridgehead.
