Sicilia — Roman Republic › Provinces (Provinciae).

Rome’s very first overseas province, organised in 241 BC out of the former Carthaginian and Syracusan lands west and north of Hieron II’s allied kingdom. Governed by a praetor from Lilybaeum, the island paid a grain tithe (the decuma) that helped feed the armies of the Republic — the granary that would sustain Rome through the long war to come.
