Founded 241 BC in Umbria, Spoletium sat astride the central Apennine routes linking Rome to the upper Adriatic. Its loyalty would be proved in 217, when after Trasimene it shut its gates and repulsed Hannibal’s advance, turning him away from the road to Rome.
