Founded 268 BC where the Apennines meet the Adriatic, Ariminum was the northern bastion of the colonial system — the hinge between peninsular Italy and the newly won Po valley. It guarded the coastal approach into Cisalpine Gaul and served as the terminus of the via Flaminia, the great road C. Flaminius drove north from Rome in 220 BC.
