Gallia Cisalpina — Roman Republic.

The Po valley — Gaul-on-this-side-of-the-Alps — lately wrenched from the Gallic tribes in the war of 225–222 BC, which culminated in the storming of the Insubrian capital Mediolanum. To hold it Rome planted two Latin colonies, Placentia and Cremona, in the very spring of 218. But the conquest was raw and bitterly resented: the Boii and Insubres rose the moment they heard Hannibal was crossing the Alps, fell on the new colonists, and gave the invader his first Italian allies. The frontier Rome had just won was the first ground to slip from its grasp.
