Karpathos — Rhodes › The Subject Islands.

The large, rugged island riding the open sea between Crete and Rhodes — so dominant a landmark that the whole sea hereabouts takes its name, the Carpathian. Its small towns string along the coasts (Potidaion, Arkaseia, the walled cape-town of Brykous, and Saros), and the island has long lain within the Rhodian orbit, a stepping-stone for the fleet and merchants of Rhodes on the run between the Aegean and the coast of Asia.
