The Subject Islands — Rhodes.

The lesser islands of the Rhodian sea, drawn into the orbit of the republic and held as her dependencies: Karpathos, which gives its name to the Carpathian Sea, and little Kasos toward Crete; Syme and Telos and Chalke clustered between the home island and the Carian mainland. Seafaring, sponge-diving and shipbuilding islands, they man the lighter craft of the Rhodian marine and stand as the maritime glacis of the island state.
