The "land opposite" — the broad sweep of the Carian mainland that Rhodes holds across the narrow strait, from the Loryma peninsula round to the bays beneath Knidos. Long incorporated into the Rhodian state, the Peraia is governed by Rhodian magistrates and enrolled in her tribes, a continental territory that gives the island-republic depth, timber, grain and men. Its fortress-harbours and watch-towers guard the sea-lanes, and its sanctuaries — above all the shrine of the maiden-goddess Hemithea at Kastabos — draw pilgrims from all the coast.
