Lindos — Rhodes › The City & Island of Rhodes.

The greatest of the three ancient cities, set on the south-eastern coast with its acropolis rising sheer above twin harbours. That citadel is crowned by the Temple of Athena Lindia, a sanctuary of such renown that pilgrims come from across the Greek world to lay their gifts before the goddess. Lindos bred Cleobulus, numbered among the Seven Sages, and Chares, the sculptor who cast the fallen Colossus of Helios. A seafaring city of old, it sent out colonists as far as Sicily long before the synoecism drew it into the new Rhodian state.
