Kameiros — Rhodes › The City & Island of Rhodes.

The third of the Dorian cities, terraced down a gentle slope on the north-western coast below Mount Atabyros — the island’s loftiest peak, whose bare summit bears the open-air altar of Zeus Atabyrios, so high that on a clear day men say Crete itself may be glimpsed from it. Unlike its two great sisters, Kameiros raised no walls; it is a town of farmers and seafarers, its hillside crowded with houses fed by a single great cistern and its terraces given over to the vine and the olive. From this house the worship of Zeus Atabyrios spread with Rhodian colonists as far as Sicilian Agrigentum.
