Ialysos — Rhodes › The City & Island of Rhodes.

The old Dorian city of the north-west, nearest of the three to the new capital and all but swallowed by it at the synoecism. Its life now clusters about the hill of Philerimos — the Achaia of old song — where the sanctuary of Athena and of Zeus Polieus looks out over the strait. Hereabouts the painter Protogenes laboured seven years upon his celebrated panel of Ialysos, a work so prized that men say it alone once stayed an enemy from putting the city to the torch. The famed temple of Apollo Erethimios stands within its territory.
