In 408 BC the three ancient Dorian cities — Lindos, Ialysos and Kameiros — joined in synoecism to found a single state and a magnificent new capital, the city of Rhodes, at the island’s north-eastern tip. The old cities endure as honoured communities within the one democracy, while the new city holds the harbours, the arsenals and the government. This is the rose-marked island sacred to Helios the Sun, whose people the whole Greek world reckons among the ablest sailors and shrewdest traders alive.
