Minyue — the Min country of the south-eastern rivers and coast, a maritime Yue people only just brought under the empire as the Qin columns press south. Its king Wuzhu has bowed to the throne, and his land has been ruled, in name, as the Minzhong commandery. But the mountains hold the conquest at arm’s length: this is a Yue world of fishers and boatmen, tattooed and short-haired, kin to the Yue tribes beyond and to Âu Lạc far to the south — restless, distinct, and held only as loosely as a frontier can be held.
