The volcanic peninsula thrust into the Saronic Gulf, fortified and renamed Arsinoe after the queen — a forward Ptolemaic base deep in old Greece, almost within sight of Athens and Corinth. It is a watch-post against Macedon and a foothold in the affairs of the mainland Greeks, held by garrison and guarded by the fleet.
