Lower Egypt (the Delta) in 218 B.C.
Lower Egypt (the Delta) — Ptolemaic Egypt › Egypt — the Two Lands.
The Delta — the broad, many-mouthed fan of the Nile where the river meets the sea — is the royal and commercial core of the kingdom. Here stand Alexandria, the Greek capital and greatest city of the world; Naukratis, the old Greek trading colony; and Memphis at the Delta’s apex, the ancient pharaonic seat where the kings are still crowned. It is the most Hellenised quarter of Egypt, dense with Greek settlers, soldiers and merchants.
