The Delmatae — Illyrian Tribes.

A fierce and stubborn people of the rugged hinterland behind the central Adriatic coast, named from their stronghold of Delminium. They are pastoralists of the high stony country, herders whose wealth is reckoned in cattle, and they are said to hold their land in common — parcelling it out afresh among the people every few years rather than letting any man own his field. Hardy and warlike, they will become the most obstinate enemies of Rome in all the Illyrian country.
