The Dardani — Illyrian Tribes.

A powerful and populous inland people of the high country of the upper Axios and Margus, on the northern march of Macedon — perennial enemies of the Macedonian kings, forever pressing down from the mountains whenever a king fell or marched away. They are reckoned among the greatest of the interior nations, and the most uncouth: it is told that they wash but thrice in a lifetime, and that against the cold they dig caves beneath their dunghills for the warmth of the dung.
