The Allobroges — Celtic Tribes.

A powerful trans-Alpine people of the country between the Rhône and the Alps, in the valley of the Isère and the high passes above it. Their land lay full across Hannibal’s road in 218: he had to force a passage through it, and as his army began the ascent of the mountains the chiefs of the Allobroges gathered their warriors and seized the heights along his route, harrying his column and inflicting heavy loss in the narrow places before he could win clear toward the summit of the pass.
