Malta — a Punic island-station in the central narrows between Africa and Sicily, long held by Carthage and dotted with her sanctuaries, including the famous temple of Melqart-Herakles at Tas-Silġ. In the very first months of the war, in 218 BC, the Roman consul Sempronius descended on it and took it without a fight, severing one of Carthage’s central sea-bridges.
