Modern Cádiz — the oldest Phoenician colony of the West, founded by Tyre beyond the Pillars of Herakles as the gateway to Atlantic and Tartessian silver. Its great temple of Melqart, the Punic Herakles, was the most venerated shrine of the western Phoenicians; here the Barcids sacrificed before their campaigns and claimed the god’s protection for the Spanish enterprise.
