The Macedonian homeland: the broad plains of Pieria, Bottiaea and Emathia about the capital Pella, the old royal seat of Aigai, and the sacred precinct of Zeus at Dion beneath Mount Olympus. This is the kingdom proper — the land of the Macedones who fill the phalanx and the Companion squadrons, and whose gold from Mount Pangaeum funds the throne.
