The towering limestone citadel above Corinth — the mightiest of the fetters — commanding the Isthmus and the one land road into the Peloponnese. Aratus of Sicyon stole it from Macedon in a legendary night-assault in 243, freeing Corinth for the Achaean League; but in 224 Antigonus Doson received it back as the price of saving Achaea from Sparta, and Philip holds it still. To garrison Acrocorinth was to hold the gate of the whole Peloponnese — and a standing lever over the Achaean League itself.
